The registration platform will open soon to submit abstracts for poster and oral presentation. The GP2A conference offers an opportunity for PhD students and early career researchers to share the stage with our invited speakers, so this year a number of abstracts will be selected for oral communication.

A Joint Event Hosted by the ICI Division of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry and the RSC Carbohydrate Interest Group in QUB, 21-22 Nov, 2022

The meeting, organized by Prof Gerd Wagner (QUB), brought together over 2 days a great line of speakers with research interests in Carbohydrate and Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology from across Ireland, UK and Europe. It also featured the Dextra Award Lecture by Prof Gavin Miller (Keele University). Importantly, a dedicated Early Career Researcher session provided an opportunity for PhD students, postdocs, and early stage academics to present their research.

The ICI Postgraduate Award 2022
Deadline for receipt of nominations: Friday, 29th April, 2022
The nominee must be a registered PhD student in any Chemistry discipline working in an Irish Higher Education Institution. They must have demonstrated excellence in research through publications. They must also have demonstrated a commitment to supporting and promoting Chemistry within their Institution (e.g. through active participation in public engagement initiatives). A person nominated for this award must be a member of the Institute at the time of nomination or upon receipt of the award.
Nomination Process: The nominator, who must be the student’s PhD supervisor, shall send one electronic copy of their nomination by email to the President of the Institute, which will include a cover letter providing a brief resume of the reasons for the nomination, together with a CV (maximum 2 pages) of the nominee.

ICI Annual Award for Chemistry (Eva Philbin Public Lecture Series) Award 2021
/in News /by cmarmion@rcsi.ieThe Institute of Chemistry of Ireland Annual Award for Chemistry was inaugurated in 2005. Since 2007, the lectures are termed the Eva Philbin Public Lecture Series. The late Professor Eva Philbin was formerly Head of the Chemistry Department in University College Dublin and also a former President of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland. The award is for a practising chemist, who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of chemistry and has considerably raised the profile of chemistry through both the excellence of their work and their ability to communicate in an effective and lucid manner.

Institute of Chemistry of Ireland Young Chemists’ Network Host International Women’s Day Event on 9th March, 2022

Call for Nominations’ for the ICO Young Researcher Award 2022

This award was established in 2012 to encourage carbohydrate research by young investigators and shall be given to a researcher working on a project focused on any aspect of glycochemistry and/or glycobiology. The recipient of this award will be invited to present their work orally at the 30th International Carbohydrate Virtual Symposium in Brazil, from July 10th to 15th, 2022. Professor Tadhg Begley is the 2021 recipient of the ICI Boyle Higgins’ Gold Medal and Lecture Award

Welch Foundation Chair, at Texas A&M University in the US, is the recipient of the ICI Boyle Higgins’ Gold Medal and Lecture Award 2021. Professor Begley is not only an outstanding and internationally recognised leader in the field of chemical biology and natural product synthesis but he has also inspired generations of chemists both here in Ireland and indeed internationally. Our warmest congratulations to Professor Begley. We are very much hoping that Professor Begley will be able to deliver his award lecture in person in 2022.

International Chemistry Olympiad 2021
/in News /by cmarmion@rcsi.ieTeam Ireland has achieved its best success to date in the International Chemistry Olympiad, which was held from Saturday, July 24 to Monday, August 2, 2021, with all four competing students receiving awards for the first time. Two students, Oisín Ó Feinneadha, from St. Peter’s College Secondary School, Wexford and Tong Wu, from Clongowes Wood College, Clane, Co. Kildare got silver medals, placing them in the top 10-30% of Chemistry students in the world. Oscar Despard, from Sandford Park School, Ranelagh, Dublin also received a bronze medal and Aoife Morris, from St. Aloysius’ College, Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork completed the extraordinary success of Team Ireland by getting an Honourable Mention award.
Warmest congratulations to theses exceptional students on not only their outstanding achievements but for also being wonderful Irish Student Ambassadors. Congratulations also to their teachers and schools and all those who supported them. A special word of congratulations and thanks to the academic staff across five Irish Higher Education Institutions who provided expert training and support to these students.
45th Institute of Chemistry of Ireland Congress 2021 – Impacting Healthcare with Chemistry

ICI Honorary Fellowship

Professor Dervilla M.X. Donnelly, Emeritus Professor of Phytochemistry
at University College Dublin,
has been awarded an honorary fellowship of the Institute.
This is in recognition of her highly distinguished career in academia and her significant contributions to the wider community serving in a variety of leadership roles. Professor Donnelly was elected the first female President of the Royal Dublin Society, and appointed Chairman of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Chairman of the European Science Research Council, Vice-President of the European Science Foundation, and Senior Vice-President and Vice-President of the Royal Irish Academy. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, an Institute of Chemistry of Ireland Boyle-Higgins Medallist, a UCD Charter Day Medallist, and a Royal Irish Academy Cunningham Medallist.
Our warmest congratulations to Professor Donnelly on receiving this honorary fellowship, one of the highest honours the Institute can bestow.

ICI Annual Award for Chemistry (Eva Philbin Public Lecture Series) 2020
/in News /by cmarmion@rcsi.ieThe Institute of Chemistry of Ireland Annual Award for Chemistry was inaugurated in 2005. Since 2007, the lectures are termed the Eva Philbin Public Lecture Series. The late Professor Eva Philbin was formerly Head of the Chemistry Department in University College Dublin and also a former President of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland. The award is for a practising chemist, who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of chemistry and has considerably raised the profile of chemistry through both the excellence of their work and their ability to communicate in an effective and lucid manner.

Professor DeSilva will deliver his award lecture in 2021.
ICI Annual Award for Chemistry (Eva Philbin Public Lecture Award Series) 2019
Congratulations to Professor Declan McCormack, TU Dublin on winning the ICI Annual Award for Chemistry (Eva Philbin Lecture Award Series) 2019.
Professor McCormack delivered an outstanding award lecture during the virtually ICI award ceremony on the 19th November, 2020. A recording of this lecture will be made available shortly for all to view on this ICI website. ICI Postgraduate Award 2020
The Institute received a number of outstanding nominations for this year’s postgraduate award. All nominations were sent for independent review. The ICI decided to present a joint award this year to Dr Conor Crawford (UCD) and Dr Priyanka Ganguly (IT Sligo). Our warmest congratulations to them both. They were presented with their award during the ICI award ceremony which took place virtually on the 19th November, 2020. Priyanka is currently a Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher in the University of Glasgow, Scotland and Conor is a postdoctoral researcher in the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Berlin, Germany. We wish Priyanka and Conor every success in their future endeavours. They are both wonderful ambassadors for chemistry research in Ireland.
ICI Second Level Education Award 2019
This award is presented to students who achieved the highest grade in higher level Leaving Certificate Chemistry in Ireland in 2019. Our warmest congratulations to Mr Brian Durkan from St. Muredach’s College, Ballina, Co. Mayo and to Óran O’Sullivan from Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Co. Cork. Brian and Óran received their award medals during the virtual award ceremony on the 19th November, 2020. They were joined by their families, their teachers and school principals. Dr Fiona Desmond, the Chief Examiner for Chemistry and Physics and Chemistry from the State Examinations Commission delivered a very informative presentation on the leaving certificate chemistry examination process. It also put into context Brian and Óran’s exceptional achievements on being the top two students in Ireland in leaving certificate higher level chemistry in 2019. Brian is currently studying Chemistry in the University of Oxford, UK and Óran is studying mathematical science in UCC. We wish Brian and Óran continued success.

ICI Postgraduate Chemistry Research Symposium 2020 – Update

A special word of thanks to the Organising Committee for hosting this symposium and for bringing together postgraduate scholars from Institutions across Ireland and beyond, providing them with a unique opportunity to share their cutting edge research and to build their professional networks, in a year when most physical conferences have been cancelled.
