ABOUT US
The establishment of the division of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry within the ICI represents a fundamental step in our disciplines and will allow us a stronger support of medicinal and biological chemistry in Ireland (north and south). This will be strongly enhanced by becoming members of the European Federation of Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
The aim of our Division of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry is to promote the fields of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry among academic and industry researchers in Ireland by encouraging collaborations within the island and to enhance the innovative potential of the Irish-based research groups.
Considering the large number of pharmaceutical companies with operative sites in Ireland (north and south), the number of researchers working in both fields in Irish Universities as well as the successful degrees in Medicinal/Biological Chemistry being developed by several of our universities, one of our most important objectives is the organization of biannual meetings to bring high level international speakers and showcase the research carried out in Ireland.
Additionally, we aim at creating networking opportunities among researchers (both from academy and industry) based in Ireland. These networking events are meant to foster the establishment of new collaborations, to better exploit the existing research potential and to evaluate dormant synergies. Furthermore, we want to increase the visibility of Irish Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology Research internationally, in order to foster new ideas and collaborations, and thereby create the foundation for collaborative projects to apply for exchequer funding from the European Union and international funding sources.
The ICI MBC Committee 2023
Up until joining the ICI as a Division, the Medicinal and Biological Chemistry groups have functioned as networks consisting of researchers from different universities in Ireland. Now a committee has been constituted and the corresponding elected members are shown below.

The European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC)
The European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (EFMC) is an independent association representing medicinal chemistry societies in Europe. Its objective is to advance the science of medicinal chemistry by promoting cooperation and networking, by providing training and mentoring, by rewarding scientific excellence, and by facilitating communication and influencing stakeholders.
31st Annual GP2A Medicinal Chemistry Conference
The Group for the Promotion of Pharmaceutical chemistry in Academia (GP2A) will hold the 31st Annual GP2A Medicinal Chemistry Conference at the School of Pharmacy, Aix-Marseille Université, Marseille – France, 23-25th August 2023.
The registration platform will open soon to submit abstracts for poster and oral presentation. The GP2A conference offers an opportunity for PhD students and early career researchers to share the stage with our invited speakers, so this year a number of abstracts will be selected for oral communication.
Further information about the conference will follow soon.
Members of the GP2A network are entitled to substantial registration discounts, so be sure to enrol as a network member prior to registration.
For more information about the GP2A network, please feel free to visit our website: www.gp2a.org

A Joint Event Hosted by the ICI Division of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry and the RSC Carbohydrate Interest Group in QUB, 21-22 Nov, 2022!
The first event organized by the recently launched Medicinal Chemistry Division of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland, jointly with the RSC Carbohydrate Interest Group took place in Queen’s University Belfast on 21-22 November 2022.
The meeting, organized by Prof Gerd Wagner (QUB) brought together over 2 days a great line of speaker with research interests in Carbohydrate and Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology from across Ireland, UK and Europe. It also featured the Dextra Award Lecture by Prof Gavin Miller (Keele University). Importantly, a dedicated Early Career Researcher session provided an opportunity for PhD students, postdocs, and early stage academics to present their research.
